AFFI Endorsements for the March 20, 2012 Primary Election
|
Your AFFI Legislative Committee has finalized the endorsements for the upcoming March 20, 2012 Primary Election. These endorsements came after careful analysis and consideration of the incumbent candidates voting record with the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois, or our questionnaire for non-incumbents in select contests. The endorsement process also included important and helpful input from our local leaders throughout the State.
It is vitally important for us to support those political candidates who have shown their support, or their willingness to support issues important to professional fire fighters and our families. Please share this endorsement sheet with your members, and encourage them to vote in the March 20, 2012 Primary Election and support candidates that are not just Democrats or Republicans, but “Fire Fighter Friendly”.
Recently, your AFFI Legislative Committee met with your PEC Committee in our Springfield office to identify those candidates who have a contested Primary Election and together we have identified our targeted election races. Soon you may be contacted by a PEC member to ask for assistance from your members to participate in the election process by distributing yard signs, manning a phone bank, walking a precinct or two, or other assistance to a local candidate. Please encourage and share with your members the importance of our political action to help ensure that, together, we work to elect “Fire Fighter Friendly” decision makers in Springfield and Washington D.C.
Please feel free to contact your Legislative Representative with any questions you may have.
Thank you for your support and for your assistance.

Hometown Heroes campaign
We at Driving the Midwest want to thank everyone who visited our site to vote and show their support for all of our recent first responder finalists. Each of these firefighters, paramedics and police officers truly exemplifies an everyday hero – individuals serving their communities with dedication, bravery and pride, both in and out of uniform.
With more than 1,300 votes cast during the week, we are pleased to name Phil Carmody the winner of the special first responders round of Our Town, Our Heroes!
We are proud to recognize Phil and his dedication to the Naperville Fire Department and Opportunity Knocks. To reward Phil, General Motors will provide him with a week-long loan of a new vehicle and a special prize package. Phil’s nominator, John Halgren, will also receive a week-long loan of a General Motors vehicle. Continue reading to see why John says Phil is a hero!

Congratulations to Phil on wining the Hometown Hero Campaign!!
Phil Carmody from Naperville, nominated by John Halgren
Phil is a hero for two reasons. Not only is he a Naperville firefighter paramedic, but he also serves as the President on the Board of Directors for ‘Opportunity Knocks,’ an organization dedicated to advancing opportunities for challenged adults in our neighborhood. His brother, Mike, founded the organization and was inspired by their brother John, who has Down syndrome. Phil campaigns tirelessly and truly represents a hometown hero.

MDA 2011
August 19, 2011. Naperville, Illinois. The Naperville Professional Firefighters continue the tradition of holding an annual “Fill the Boot” campaign to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Every Friday in August, firefighters will be hitting the streets of downtown Naperville with boots in hand. The goal this year will be to raise more than $15,000 to help fight Muscular Dystrophy. Naperville Firefighters began raising money for the MDA in 2003. Ever since, it has been an August tradition. The donations collected this month will stay local to help area residents that are battling the disease.
The International Association of Firefighters has been helping the MDA for over 50 years. Since then, they have raised hundreds of millions of dollars for the research and treatment of neuromuscular diseases. Nationwide, nearly 300,000 firefighters and paramedics will be holding out their boots this summer in the hopes of beating last year's record-setting collection of $27.6 million to fight the disease.
